We were given a description to follow, and while watching the first season of the series, twice, I was trying really hard to find a way of fitting my new characters, Claudia and Quentin, within the storyline. Since the first season has only three episode, I'd like to add a fourth episode and I had two different ideas in my head;
1. Claudia is a PDS sufferer. Embarrassed of the way she looks now she never leaves her apartment. Before she was killed she loved to watch horror films, so she still continues to watch them, but now they cause flashbacks and remind her of the time when she, and Quentin weren't treated. Since Quentin is just a part of her imagination, he can't get the same treatment as her and remains a zombie.
2. For Claudia, horror films became reality when on the 'Night of the rising' the dead came back as zombies. Luckly, the zombies that get treatment (PDS sufferers), can, more or less, live a normal life. Even though Claudia isn't a PDS sufferer, she likes to pretend that she and Quentin are.
Not sure if my way of thinking was drifting too far from the given description, I emailed Kat and asked for her opinion. She replyed not too long after that saying she likes the first option, which was what I was hoping her to say. That helped me a lot considering we had to present our ideas in just a few days.
Having the first idea in mind, I had to come up with a story of how Claudia died. I remembered one scene from the series, when the militia found out that there is a PDS sufferer in town. At first, Jem, Kieren's sister, thaught they knew about Kieren. She alarmed her parents and they all waited for the militia to arrive and to fight for Kieren. The cars arrived and there were several men raging with anger. But instead of knocking on Walker's door, they knocked on the door opposite to the Walker's house. That was the home of Ken Burton, and his wife Maggie, who was a PDS sufferer. Bill Macy, forced Maggie to get on her knees, in the middle of the road, to take out her contact lenses and to show everyone that she is a 'rotter'. Maggie, begging for her life takes them of, and a few seconds later, Bill pulls the trigger.
It wasn't mentioned how Maggie died the first time so thaught it would be good to connect her death with Claudia somehow. "Claudia killed Maggie, so Ken Burton kills Claudia" was my first scenario, but then I remembered that Claudia wasn't a zombie until she was killed. A few brainstorms later, I realized that Maggie didn't have to be eaten by Claudia, but Claudia could still be responsable for the death even if she wasn't a zombie. And this is how the story goes...
Claudia and Jem were childhood friends. They were together through thick and thin, even when Jem lost her brother, Kieren. Jem, who is a member of the Human Volunteer Force, had a gun with her at all times. One evening, while the two girls were sitting on the sidewalk in front of Jem's house, Jem gave the gun to Claudia, while she was reaching for something in her backpack. Being a child at heart, Claudia started playing around pretending she was shooting. Then suddenly, not expecting the gun to be loaded, she pulled the trigger and shot Jem's neighbour, Mrs. Burton, who was watering her garden, straight in the head. Witnessing what happened, Ken Burton, shocked, upset, angry and what not, runs over to Claudia. She tries to apologise and to call ambulance, but before she could reach for her phone he puts his hands around her neck. Few moments later, there were two dead bodies lying on the on the street.
On the night of the rising, Claudia returned as a zombie just like Kieren. Although Ken Burton was the reason why she was dead, she was the reason why his wife was dead so she wasn't that angry. Quentin on the other hand, her imagionary boyfriend, was very angry and wanted revenge more than anything. He decided to take Claudia on a dinner date - to Mr. Burton's garden. Mr. Burton used to always water the plants his back garden at 7 p.m., just before his favourite TV show starts, and they got there just in time for the main course.
A week later Claudia was taken to the rehab facility. She spent 10 months there, 2 months longer than Kieren. When she moved back to Roarton, she was too embarrassed of the way she looked and what she had done that she never left her apartament. Quentin was still in her life, but he remained a zombie because he couldn't be treated (he doesn't exist and is just part of her imagination). She has always been into horror films, so she thaught that if she watches some, she will go back to her old self and everything will go back to normal. But it didn't. The films caused flashbacks from the night of her and Quentin's dinner date. She hated the flashbacks and would often lock Quentin in the little shed in the garden, out of anger.
