Bruising; Character Research

A bruise is a type of injury that causes tiny blood vessels (capillaries) to burst and the blood gets trapped below the surface of our skin. It is normal to get a bruise after suffering a cut, fall, burn or any other injury, they are part of our body's natural healing process.
As we age, our skin becomes thinner and the capillaries become more prone to breaking, also women's skin is more prone to bruising than men's. There are three forms of bruising; subcutaneous (beneath the skin), intramuscular (in the underlying muscle) and periosteal (on the bones). Blue bruises that appear on the legs may appear from varciose veins, but if the bruises are black they can indicate a development of a bloot clot, in which case the person should see a physician.

There are two types of bruising that I wanted to research. Bruises that I want to create on Claudia's neck were caused by manual strangulation. Instead of having cuts and wounds, Quentin will have bruises caused caused by lifting heavy objects (human body).

Bruising caused by weightlifting

When lifting heavy objects, it may cause small tears in the blood vessels. Many athletes and weight lifters bruise during workouts. However, some bruises are more serious than just a few broken vessels - muscle strain. Muscle strain is caused by muscle tears from overstretching and is usually followed by pain upon movement and swelling. It takes about 10-14 days for the vessels to heal and for blood to be absorbed back into the body.

Manual Strangulation

Strangulation is when someone's neck is constricted with the goal to cut off their blood flow or air supply. This activity can cause death and it has been a common way of murder for centuries. Manual strangulation, also known as choking, is when the constriction is accomplished by hands. It is more common for a man to preform this kind of murder method than for a woman mainly because it requires a great deal of force.
Death can occur in two ways; asphyxia (cutting off air supply) and ischemia (stopping blood flow). Victims often develop physical signs of strangling such as small red marks and bruising along the neck as well as severe damage to the voicebox and hyoid bone that is located in the throat. Those who don't die from strangling often experience physical symptoms; difficulty swallowing or breathing as well as the emotional trauma, commonly as a resault of domestic violence and abuse.
