Evaluation Of The Brief

For our last project, A love of the Dark, we were given three characters to choose from and adapt them to a TV series. I chose Claudia and Quentin and, personally, I found the entire process of creating the caracters, brainstorming and finding a way to link their description with the TV series very creating, but also fun and challenging. The TV series that I chose has a very depressing setting and and I think that my characters fit very well. The fact that we had a week to come up with our ideas was not that scary considering that it is our third brief and I knew where to start my research from and how to develop my final look. But what I did find very hard and scary was the presentation we had to present in class and as I have a fear of public speech, I vas very nervous and my mind went blank and I left out some of my ideas and things I wanted to say. Kat was very helpfull with all the questions that I had, and so was Fenella, helping us with both our hair and make up ideas. I couldn't go very crazy with the hairstyles as I think it wouldn't fit the TV series, but I probably should have pacticed the make up looks a few more times before creating my final looks. However, looking back on the first semester and seeing how much my skills have improved and how much I've learnt, I am very pleased with both of my characters and I am looking forward to our second year.

Claudia; Final Look

This is my final look for Claudia's character. I went for a quite pale purple eye make up and a bohemian hairstyle (wavy hair with little braids).

Quentin; Final Look

Here is my final look for Quentin's character for the In The Flesh TV series. It was a location shoot, in the back garden of my friend's house in London and I shot the look over out Easter Break. It took me about 2 hours and 20 minutesto create the make up look as I applyed the base all over his arms, neck, back and chest.
Originally I planned to create veins, cuts or a wound but I changed my mind throughout my research and created a bruise on his chest.

The blood was probably supposed to be a lot darker and it did not turn out quite realistic. Also, the make up could have been a bit darker, but I think it looks fine as it is and I really like how the hair turned out.

Quentin; Make Up Practice

This was a practice for my final make up look for Quentin's character. I used the face chart tht  have already created but did not add any blood as I was focusing on the rest of the face and I believe this look suits my character very well.

First I mixed a quite dark concealer with the Illamasqua White Skin Base and applyed it all over the face, even over the lips. Then I used the same concealer, added a tiny bit of Supracolor Black to draw on the wrinkes with an angled brush, then added some Supracolor Purple/Lila and Red shades under the eyes and powdered the entire face. Next, I used the same black colour to fill in my model's eyebrows and then used a black shadow on top. Lastly, I added some black eyeshadow to make his eyes darker, and that's it!

Claudia; More Research + Hair Charts

In the hair charts shown in the previous post, I created one messy look with little braids. I thaught I would do more research on braided hairstyles and see if I could include them in my final design. I am not a big fan of the french braid so I researched and created looks with normal and a fishtail braids.

Hairstyle no.1

A messy fishtail braid on the side. Side parting on the opposite side of the braid.

Hairstyle no.2

Here I decided to create a hairstyle with a middle parting and two fishtail braids on each side that go over the ears. One braid is looser, therefore it seems longer than the other. The look is messy and there are bits of hair coming out of both braids.

Hairstyle no.3

Hairstyle no.4

This look is very similar to the one I created and posted in the previous post. I really liked the idea of having tiny braids all over the hair, they don't even have to be as neat or tight. They are good to add some texture to the look, and if the braids are really messy they can look like the hair hasn't been combed in ages and it is so knotty that the knots are looking sort of like dreadlocks. Hair can be curled or straigtened before hand, depending of what kind of look you want but I quite like when it is wavy and I'd add some texturising spray and hair spray to get a matte look. Also, the long fringe were used to frame the face.

Practice

I decided to try out the Hairstyle no.4 on my doll to see how would my idea look in real life. The dolls hair was wavy from a previous practice so I just left it as it was. I created a middle parting, not too neat, but neat enough to look like a middle parting. Then I added some braids (I believe there were eight all together) all over the hair. I didn't really try to create same sized braids or if the sections I used were the same size.

I think the look would look better if my model has blonde hair, but I think this is the hairstyle I will use for my final look.

Claudia; Research + Hair Charts

As I said in one of my first posts about Claudia, I see her with wavy or crimped frizzy hair. She does not care about the way her hair looks, as long as her 'zombie face' is hidden. I researched some zombie hairstyles as well as messy and frizzy hair to get inspiration, then created some hair charts. I think that she wouldn't look the part and fit the series if I create anything else than an 'effortless look'. That this is the only down side to her character, but on the other hand, I can't imagine her looking differently. Also, I wanted to use a model with brown hair at first but I think I fill find one with blonde hair because the colour will go better with the make up.

Hairstyle no.1

For this look I'd either use really small sized tongs to curl the hair or a crimper only on the bottom half of the hair and then brush it out. The rest would be natural or straightened hair, depending on my model's hair type, and it would just fall over the really messy hair underneath with the middle parting.

 Hairstyle no.2

Side parting, messy pony tail, quite loose with bits of hair falling on at the front, framing the face.

Hairstyle no.3

Wavy hair and a middle parting. The hair wouldn't have any volume and it would fall naturally over the face. I'd use a texturising spray to make it look matte.

Hairstyle no.4

Side parting and fringe would be backcombed at the roots to add some lift the the hair. The rest of the hair would be in a low twisteb bun with some bits of hair falling out.

Hairstyle no.5

Wavy hair with little braids added for some texture.

Practice

Here I practiced the hairstyle no.4 which is a messy low bun. My doll had a middle parting when I started this look and I created a side one but wanted to leave the middle parting showing. I left the fringe and a few bits of hair at the front to frame the face and then pulled the rest of the hair back into a low twisted bun, which I secured with a hair tie and some pins. It looked already looked messy, but not as messy as my drawing so I pulled a few bits of the hair out of the bun and around it and that was the final look.
