At the beggining of the century men shaved and their hair was short and brushed forward over their forehead (kind of a messy look). Beards and moustaches came back in 1836. From about 1840 to 1865, as the hair got longer so did the beards, moustaches and sideburns. "A la mode" was a style with no moustaches and sideburns attached to a short beard. Abraham Lincoln had that kind of style. The top hat was an essential accessory for every man in the 19th century.

Just like women, men used different oils and homemade pomades made out of natural ingredients to style their hair. Fritz Henkel (1848 - 1930) was a German marchant and owner of a company called Henkel & Cie. In 1883 he launched a hair pomade. By the 20th century his company was one of the most important in the world making hair care products, and selling them in 125 countries.
